Your Team Is Watching What You Do, Not What You Put on the Poster

Leading by example means consistently demonstrating the standards and behaviors you expect from your team.

You can hang all the posters you want.

TEAMWORK!

RESPECT!

CLEAN AS YOU GO!

FOOD SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU!

Fantastic.

But then the manager walks past something on the floor without picking it up.

And the team just learned the actual standard.

That's leadership.

Everything Leaders Walk Past Teaches Something

Walk past an unlabeled container?

You taught something.

Ignore a dirty station?

You taught something.

Skip handwashing because you're in a hurry?

Definitely taught something.

But it works the other direction too.

Grab the broom.

Help dish.

Wash your hands.

Check the cooler.

Thank someone.

Jump on the line when they're buried.

Your team notices that too.

Standards Become Believable When Leaders Live Them

It's difficult to demand urgency while spending the rush in the office.

It's difficult to demand cleanliness when your own workspace is a disaster.

It's difficult to demand respect when leadership doesn't demonstrate it.

Your title gives you authority.

Your behavior gives you credibility.

Final Thought

Don't just tell your team what matters.

Show them.

Every shift.

Especially when you're busy.

Because that's when everyone is watching.
